What are computer upgrades?

Computer upgrades are improvements made to a computer’s hardware or software to enhance its performance, capabilities, or functionality. Popular upgrades include installing larger and/or faster RAM, migrating storage from HDD to SSD, and updating to a newer operating system. What hardware do you upgrade?

We replace and upgrade a wide variety of computer components, including the following: RAM modules, SSD and HDD drives, CPU chips, graphics cards, sound cards, WiFi cards, power supplies, motherboards, cooling systems, and desktop cases.

What software do you upgrade?

We update, upgrade, and migrate many different types of software, including office suites, security apps, productivity suites, and operating systems. Additionally, we upgrade computer and printer firmware as required (normally as part of a computer repair).

How long does it take to upgrade a computer?

Computer upgrade times can range from a few minutes to several hours. For example, replacing a memory module (excluding testing) will rarely take longer than an hour to complete, whereas a drive replacement might take several hours to replace and configure.

How much do you charge to upgrade a computer?

We charge £30 per half hour for computer upgrades. Additionally, we have a long procedures policy to ensure that charges for longer works, such as hardware diagnostics, remain fair for all parties; for more information, see Long procedures. Replacement parts are charged separately. 

Do you use brand-name parts?

Yes, we use a combination of retail and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts from brands including Western Digital (WD), Seagate, Toshiba, Kingston, PNY, Patriot, Integral, Corsair, Crucial, SK Hynix, Micron, MSI, Asus, Gigabyte, Asrock, Foxconn, AMD, Intel, Samsung, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Acer.

How much do upgraded parts cost?

Computer parts, including upgrades, vary in price depending on their type, specification, and availability. For example, a 4GB DDR4 DIMM can be as little as £20, whereas a 16GB DDR5 DIMM can be upwards of £50.

Do you offer a guarantee on upgraded parts?

Yes, we offer a guarantee on all parts that we have supplied and fitted; new parts are guaranteed for twelve months, and refurbished and used parts are guaranteed for between one and six months. If a part that we have supplied develops a fault within the guarantee period, we will replace it at no extra cost. Please note that physical damages, such as broken screens, are not covered.

How do you offer this service?

We perform most upgrades at our workshop in Bury St Edmunds; however, some software upgrades can be performed remotely. Computer upgrades are often done as part of a computer repair.
